After three long hours on the road, it is a relief to arrive at White Rock Beach Hotel, marked by magnificent travelers’ trees. The hotel is set on a four-hectare property at the edge of Subic Bay, a lovely area with green lawns planted with coconut trees. The setting instantly gives you a leisurely feeling, quite unlike the aloofness of Subic Bay Freeport.
You have the pleasure of discovering a large beach though with gray sand. Here, there are deck chairs and parasols – and a nice view of the bay, Snake Island, and , in the distance, the mountain range of Zambales province.
Opt for a room on the beachfront in a small, two-story building facing the beach. These rooms are bright and have a private balcony. Even those on the ground floor have direct access to the beach. IT must be noted that the furniture, except for the white rattan in the living room, and the paint – need to be refurbished.
The standard rooms are in the main, four-story building. As there is no elevator, these rooms are not suitable for the elderly or for young children. Besides, only the two rooms which are set at an angle on the top floor and the family room have sea views. Although spacious and comfortable, these rooms are a bit dark and are lacking in warmth… functional and sober with wrought iron, wood and wicker furniture and a bright tiled floor.
The hotel caters to a clientele traveling “en famille”. There is a large swimming pool reserved for children. In the evening, a string orchestra and a pianist serenade you while dining. It is better to dine in the patio opening onto the garden and the beach, rather than indoors, which is insufficiently ventilated.
If you want to try out other restaurants, you can drive to the Hungry Marlin Bar and Grill located adjacent to the Subic Bay Yatch Club or to Fishcado, a restaurant that serves seafood and Filipino cuisine from Mindanao. It is located near the western side of the Boardwalk along the waterfront area in Subic Bay Freeport.
How to get there
By land (3 hours) 124 km from Manila. Take North Expressway at Balintawak and get off at San Fernando Exit no. 66. Take the Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo road passing through Bacolor, Guagua and Lubao. After the “Welcome to Dinalupihan” sign, turn right to SBMA/Olongapo. Turn left at the sign indicating “Subic Bay Freeport 9 kilometers”. Exit at Kalaklan gate following the signs. Turn left immediately after the bridge following the direction of Subic town proper and watch for the White Rock sign after the Kilometer 134 post.
